CHMURA Visual Culture Foundation invites you to an event presenting independent artistic publications that have been created since the second half of the 1980s until the end of the 1990s in Gdansk. Art-zins, leaflets, alternative periodicals, art-books, underground publications, artistic manifestos, xerographic hybrids – the second and third publication cycle will come up to the surface!
Today, printed independent publications are growing in strength both in Poland and in the world despite the dominance of the Internet and multimedia. As at their beginnings, the underground publications serve as a platform for artistic subcultures and groups fighting for their rights. They are also an expression of artistic vision and individual aesthetics – unique copies, not dependent on the rights of the publishing market, offer their creators the freedom of expression in both form and content.

OPENING OF THE EXHIBITION NAKŁAD WŁASNY

The exhibition will present art-zines and independent prints that were created in Gdansk artistic circle from the second half of the 1980s until the end of the 1990s – those dedicated to one-time artistic events, as well as publications appearing regularly.
Gdańsk has a rich tradition of independent publications appearing around that time – both those published by anarchistic circles, as well as by independent artistic groups. The most commonly known were the prints created by artists affiliated with Galeria Wyspa, Galeria C14, the Thousand Brightest Suns Foundation, Totart Formation, Otwarte Atelier, Kubańskie Cycki publisher, Szszsz publisher and the “Metafizyka Społeczna” quarterly. From the mid-1990s the presence of the “Magazyn Sztuki” was significant for the local scene – an art magazine which was one of the first in Poland to publish critical texts and reprints devoted to contemporary art. All of these initiatives will be represented within the exhibition “Nakładwłasny”.
The exhibition will become a historical background – a reference for the contemporary publishing field and a specific commentary on the social and political changes taking place in the time of Poland’s systemic transformation. We have invited the creators and representatives of various historical artistic groups to present their collections of prints and alternative publications.
At the exhibition, we will show, among others prints of Totart Formation, Thousand Brightest Suns Foundation, Wyspa Progress Foundation, Delikatesy Avantgarde Gallery and Koło Gallery as well as selected issues of the “Magazyn Sztuki” and sound recordings from the archives of Małgorzata Żerwe.
Especially for this occasion, Joanna Kabala and Andrzej Awsiej (Totart Formation/Kubańskie Cycki publishing) prepared a film consisting of archival materials, which illustrates publishing activities at the turn of the 80s and 90s.
There will also be an opportunity to watch interviews conducted by the curators during the preparation of the exhibition with: Agnieszka Wołodźko, Grzegorz Klaman, Paweł Paulus Mazur, Marek Rogulski, Zbigniew Sajnóg and founders of Gallery Koło (Jan Buczkowski, Krzysztof Gliszczyński, Dominika Krechowicz, Krzysztof Wróblewski).

PANEL DISCUSSION

A meeting with artists who, before 2000, actively participated in the creation and design of independent art magazines.
Paweł Dunin-Wąsowicz – journalist, publicist, literary critic, founder of the “Lampa” publishing house. Editor of the anthology “Xerofeeria” and “Xerofuria” devoted to Polish alternative magazines.
Paweł Paulus Mazur – cartoonist, poet, prose writer, animator of cultural events, member and co-founder of the “Totart” Formation.
Jacek Staniszewski – painter, graphic artist, performer, musician, educator, one of the creators of transawangarda, or “new Gdańsk expression”. In the years 1986-2001 he made over 200 posters for exhibitions, theater performances and concerts.
Moderation: Agnieszka Wołodźko – artist, curator, researcher and author of texts on art, architecture and contemporary urban planning. From the 1990s, Wołodźko actively co-founded the Gdańsk artistic scene.

The guests of the second meeting will be young creators and publishers of magazines and art publications.
Michał Chojecki – graphic designer, visual artist, author of books, founder of Oficyna Peryferie – serigraphy workshop and publisher of artistic books and art-zines.
Przemysław Gulda – writer, cultural journalist, expert on punk rock culture, in the 90s a member of the collective issuing an alternative political and cultural magazine “Mać Pariadka”.
Maciej Salamon and Maciej Chodziński – visual artists, working together in the artistic group “Krecha”, which in 2006-2009 released 9 original editions of the artistic magazine “Krecha”.
Moderation: Aleksandra Grzonkowska – art historian, curator, artistic producer, Anna Ratajczak-Krajka – art historian, curator, artistic producer, adjunct in the National Museum in Gdańsk.
Dolne Miasto Pany (Sebastian Szyszko, Kora Kowalska) will create an idiosyncratic drawing documentation of the events.

Dr Anna Witkowska – visual artist, graphic designer and designer. She lectures at the Academy of Art in Szczecin, where she co-runs the Art Book and Multimedia Publishing Workshop.

FROM COLLECTION TO THE ARCHIVE | DEBATE
MAIN LIBRARY OF THE GDAŃSK UNIVERSITY (Wita Stwosza 53 Street, Gdańsk)
Archives are generative spaces, laboratories of political and collective engagement – tools of cultural activism that enable legitimisation of new forms of knowledge. The panel discussion dedicated to contemporary archives will be attended by researchers from Poland and abroad who are involved in documenting social and artistic activities in local and trans-local formats. We will discuss issues concerning the methods of creating databases and protection of copyright, as well as methods of systematising and extending public access to information. We will also present projects that aim to provide alternative stories about art and artistic life through the format of the archive.
Helene Baur – director of basis-wien, Center for Contemporary Art Documentation in Austria, operating since 1997. basis-wien collects of ephemerides, catalogs and press articles on the local artistic circulation after the Second World War.
Marika Kuźmicz – president of the Arton Foundation, a non-profit organisation conducting research and exhibition activities. The Arton Foundation is currently the leader of the “Forgotten Heritage – European avant-garde art online” project.
Dominika Łabądź – visual artist, cultural animator. In 2016, together with Joanna Synowiec she initiated the project “Common part – social archive”, the consequence of which was the creation of the Working Group of the Social Archives project (GRAS).
Zofia Reznik – art researcher, curator, cultural animator, PhD student at the University of Wrocław, where she is preparing a dissertation on micro-narrations about the work of Wrocław’s female artists from the 1970s.
Katarzyna Lewandowska – art historian, feminist, curator, activist for the rights of the inhuman and the excluded. In her research, she focuses on the corporeality in contemporary art, using the discourse of feminist philosophy.
Moderation: Dorota Walentynowicz – visual artist and curator. Her current activity is related to collective practices, which aim to develop horizontal methods of functioning within the existing models of artistic production.

A concert of the cult band BIELIZNA, counted among the leading representatives of the Tri-City Alternative Scene of the 1980’s and 1990’s.
