“Radio Total. Festival of Visual Arts on Air” is a special event within which we present a selection of phenomena taking place in the artistic and cultural life of the Tri-city from the mid-80s to today, using RADIO as a means and idea of communication. “Radio Total” encompasses artistic actions in the city space, performed by artists from Poland and Germany, an exhibition about the history of radio activities in the Tri-city, as well as broadcasts on our festival frequency 91,3 UKF.
The main theme of our festival is RADIO which has, since the beginning of its existence, served as a tool for popularizing culture. Going back to traditional broadcasting and classical ways of sending and receiving (radio receivers), “Radio Total” will be available on FM radio.
On air you will hear interviews, music programs and experimental actions presented by artists working with sound, visual arts, and dance. Our guest list includes: Dana Chmielewska, Natalia Grzebała, Jarek Janiszewski, Kinga Jarocka, Paweł “Konjo” Konnak, Jakub Knera, Lucyna Kolendo, Adrian “Lipskee” Lipiński, Piotr Szymon Mańczak, Paweł “Paulus” Mazur, Robert Sęk, Tymoteusz Skiba, Anna Szynwelska, Iwona Woźniewska, Małgorzata Żerwe, as well as artists and specialists from the Content Analysis of Urban Sounds (CAUS). Radio Program Curator: Monika Popow
Our festival’s ephemeral seat will be located in Szeroka 108, right in the very centre of Gdańsk’s Main Town, with a radio studio and a gallery where you will find an exhibition about the Tri-city’s artistic radio life since the 80s. We will present archive materials from private collections of local activists, researchers and artists, including photos, posters, scripts, drafts, etc. Unique fragments of radio broadcasts made by artists, curators and various creatives will be also available for listening, courtesy of people like: Jarosław Janiszewski, Piotr Jagielski, Joanna Kabala, Paweł “Konjo” Konnak, Paweł “Paulus” Mazur, Małgorzata Żerwe. Exhibition Curator: Aleksandra Grzonkowska
Content Analysis of Urban Sounds will unfold the acoustic sphere of the city to our audience. Artists from Poland and Germany will appear in selected spaces of Gdańsk to analyse the soundscape, to trace the city’s identity from the past, presence, and future, as well as to pinpoint its social, environmental and global contexts. The artists invited include: Marcin Dymiter, Julie Myers, Łukasz Pancewicz, Carsten Stabenow, Krzysztof Topolski, Franziska Windisch. A German-Polish team of experts will carry out research and talk on air about Gdańsk’s soundscape. CAUS Curator: Florian Tuercke
The specific character of “Radio Total. Festival of Visual Arts on Air” places it within the convention of Polish futurism. Hence we chose Stanisław Lem as its patron. That is why you will also have a chance to listen to fragments of Lem’s “Fables for Robots” and “Solaris” read in various languages on air.
