“Under the Maple Tree”: Cultural Festival at the European Hanse Museum in Lübeck

»Unter dem Ahornbaum« Kulturfestival

Teaming up with Carolin Peter (Tonfink, Lübeck) Aleksandra Grzonkowska (Chmura Visual Culture Foundation, Gdansk) and Tilo Strauss (Slam A Rama, Lübeck), the European Hanse Museum invited to the second edition of the two-day cultural festival “Under the Maple Tree”. On Saturday, 17 June, and Sunday, 18 June 2023, artists from Gdansk and Lübeck met under the maple tree in the courtyard of the European Hanse Museum. The result was a diverse programme of contemporary music, theatre, modern dance, stage literature and performance.

The festival kicked off with workshops, held by the artists Julia Tymańska (Gdańsk) and Stephan Jäschke (Lübeck), in which the habitants of Lübeck were invited to help shape the festival creatively.

The idea of the Hanseatic League – to make today’s exchange between Hanseatic cities a cultural experience – created a place for artists from both Hanseatic cities to come together with Lübeck’s citizens and guests.

The audience experienced to a diverse program that also tied in with the Museum’s special exhibition “Guter Stoff” (Good Fabric). Gdańsk fashion designers Alicja Karska and Anna Witkowska with their brand “Szare Wrony” standing for high-quality up-cycling fashion, showed their designs along with the Lübeck fashion studio “Luxusbaba”. The performance artist Dana Chmielewska (Gdańsk) met Lübeck’s dance theatre group „Tanzortnord“ with both their performances amazing the audience. The internationally active sound artist Florian Tuercke played a duo concert with the Gdańsk sound-artist and Jazz drummer Krzysztof Topolski. Gdańsk’s legendary street dancer Adrian Lipskee Lipiński, excited the audience together with his artistic partner Pop Kate and the Movement Family from Lübeck, invited visitors to try out street dancing for themselves. The incredible BYTY Band from Gdańsk, played along the wonderful Lübeck bands Oh FYO!, Abarra, The Karaoke Bigband and Lübeck’s Freibeutermukke on the stage – literally – under the maple tree.

The festival atmosphere was framed by a wall of paintings, created by artists and creators from Gdańsk and Lübeck. Amongst others: Sebastian Choromański, Grzegorz Kufel, Piotr Mańczak, Julia Tymańska, Vera King and PL-UKR kids with parents (workshops by Fundacja Artystów Kolonia Teraz) & Ukrainian women’s circle: Andriana Haleshchuk, Oksana Haleshchuk, Halyna Malikova, Liuda Nikolaienko, Polina Nikorowicz, Lubow Petryk, Inna Samarina, Natalia Tsalko, Svitlana Varenyk,  in collaboration with Magdalena Paszkowska (Project Pomorskie with Ukraine by Stowarzyszenie Waga).

“Under the Maple Tree” proves that high-quality art does not need to be limited to concert halls, museums and Theaters. The festival confirms that when brought to the people, art is embraced and artists and audience together create a unique, lively, diverse and mutually enriching atmosphere.
